Get a realistic fuel estimate
Use your expected yearly mileage and a realistic combined MPG figure. EPA ratings are a useful starting point, but traffic, weather, idling, cargo, tire pressure, and driving style can change real-world efficiency. For gasoline price, use a current local average or a slightly higher planning figure.
Fuel-cost formula
Annual gallons = annual miles ÷ MPG. Annual fuel cost = annual gallons × price per gallon. Cost per mile = annual fuel cost ÷ annual miles.
Compare two vehicles fairly
Keep annual mileage and fuel price the same, then change only the MPG. The difference shows the potential fuel savings, but it should be considered alongside purchase price, insurance, maintenance, and depreciation.

Why is my real fuel economy lower than the rating?
Traffic, short trips, idling, temperature, speed, cargo, tire pressure, and driving behavior can reduce real-world MPG.
Does the result include maintenance?
No. The calculation covers gasoline only. Maintenance, repairs, insurance, registration, parking, tolls, and depreciation are separate.
How can I compare two cars?
Keep annual mileage and gas price unchanged, then enter each vehicle MPG separately and compare the annual results.
